Leigh Goedeke, PhD
Assistant Professor and Principal Investigator
Originally from Maryland, Leigh obtained her B.S. in Biology from Gettysburg College in 2005 and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from NYU School of Medicine in 2009. Under the mentorship of Carlos Fernandez-Hernando she identified and characterized novel genes and miRNAs involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism using functional genomic screens. In 2016, Leigh joined the laboratory of Gerald Shulman at Yale School of Medicine, where she applied stable isotope tracer methodology to understand how alterations in substrate utilization contribute to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. She used similar approaches to determine the therapeutic potential of liver-directed mitochondrial uncoupling agents to reverse metabolic syndrome. Leigh joined the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an Assistant Professor in April 2022 and is currently interested in understanding the mechanism(s) by which hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance drive diabetic atherosclerosis and how altered metabolic flexibility in the vasculature may contribute to this process.
